A former Junior Assistant of the Supreme Court accused CJI Ranjan Gogoi of sexual harassment and said that the Chief Justice 'touched her all over'. The 35 year old woman has submitted an affidavit to 22 judges of the Supreme Court summarizing her account and further added that how she was dismissed from her post and how the harassment went even further after her dismissal.
Chief Justice Gogoi while denying all charges has described the allegations as "unbelievable." He himself alleged a conspiracy behind these allegations as he said, "There has to be a bigger force behind this; they are trying to deactivate the Chief Justice's office." Gogoi further added that the allegations has come up at a convenient time as the bench which he is heading is scheduled to hear "many, many important cases" and said that this is also the time of general election in India.
The CJI has however found support in the Attorney General and Solicitor General of India. Solicitor General Of India, Tushar Mehta said that the it appears to be a "blackmail technique."
The special bench consisting of CJI himself and Justice Arun Mishra and Justice Sanjeev Khanna in a hurriedly arranged hearing said that the judiciary can not be made a scapegoat. The Apex court also refrained from passing any judicial order and left it to the wisdom of the media "to exercise restraint and act responsibly."
